How to Propagate Pothos Plants & Where to Cut Pothos

Pothos are vining plants that are great for and are low in maintenance and are very popular when growing the plant indoors. Pothos plants do well in conditions with low light and can also handle some tolerating neglect, making them very good for whether you are an experienced plant grower or one of those who have started growing plants recently.

Pothos plants are tropical plants and not only fun to grow they can be easily propagated it can be an easy process to grow a new plant or to take a plant that is with you and make it grow out.

Pothos Plants can be grown in water as well as soil and spaghetti moss

Best Time To Propagate Pothos

The best time to propagate a Pothos is in the months of spring and summer which are the periods that are the growing period and that is the time when it can grow well. During Fall and Winter don’t propagate these plants as they are not growing period and most likely will fail to propagate also it is not the right period for taking the stem cuttings from the plant as the mother plant will get affected.

Where to Cut Pothos to Propagate

You need to find the nodes are small bumps which is the point where the leaf and petiole join to the main vine itself this is where you need to snip using a shear. Make sure that each of the cutting has multiple nodes The nodes are also the points where aerial roots as well as new leaves will grow. You can make a cutting with a single node or with multiple nodes and both are fine but using single-node cuttings allows you to experiment with propagating with multiple cuttings.

Propagate Pothos in Water

If you want to propagate pothos by water then it is a very popular option as it allows you to watch the roots grow in water. After growing the plant in the water in a container you will need to transfer the plant to the soil as the last step. Stem Cuttings, Containers, and water are needed  to propagate pothos and follow the method below

  1. As a first step use pruning shears and take a cutting of your stem
  2. Make sure you cut and remove the leaves from the bottom and keep at least 1 or 2 leaves at the top as they need to be placed in water
  3. Place the stem cuttings in water and make sure that nodes and stem are placed inside the water while you keep the leaves above the water
  4. Make sure that you change the water every week when the cuttings look like they are growing to keep it fresh. After 2 weeks you should start seeing roots grow across the nodes.
  5. Place the root stem cuttings from water to soil once you can see the roots have grown to 2 inches.
  6. Make sure that you move them to a pot that has drainage holes and is kept at a place where light is bright but indirect and has soil that you water to keep them moist.

Propagate Pothos in Soil

Instead of propagating pothos in water, you can skip that step and propagate pothos in soil as that is a more reliable method but is not as popular. Make sure that you have a good rooting soil

  1. As a first step take your pruning shears and get a cutting from stem make sure that when you take the cutting there are multiple nodes
  2. Make sure that you remove the leaves from the bottom of the plant cutting but there are at least 1-2 leaves at the top.
  3. Dip the cutting’s end where it was cut in a rooting hormone
  4. You can use your fingers to make a hole in the soil and afterward place the cuttings that have been dipped in the hormone now place them in the soil. When placing the cutting in the soil make sure that the stem with all the nodes is below the soil but the leaves are above the soil. Also gently make sure that you pat so that the cutting remains in place
  5. Make sure that you water the soil so that it is kept moist evenly but not so much that it feels soaked. Also, make sure that in the location you choose for propagating plants, there is sunlight that is bright but indirect. After a couple of weeks, you can see that the plant is growing and now you can even let the soil get a little dry before you water it again.
  6. After a couple of weeks, you should start seeing roots

Propagate Pothos in Sphagnum Moss

  1. Sphagnum Moss should be kept in water to rehydrate it for 20 minutes as it is bought dry. You can submerge the Sphagnum Moss completely in a bowl filled with water
  2. Just as in other methods use a pruning shear and take stem cuttings
  3. Make sure that you remove the leaves at the bottom but keep the cuttings on the top
  4. After the sphagnum moss has soaked remove it out and first wring the sphagnum moss to dry it completely.  Add sphagnum moss to a container or a glass pot and add your stem cuttings to the moss and make sure that nodes and stem are pressed down and a couple of leaves are at the top
  5. Make sure that sphagnum moss is kept moist but not soaked by regular watering also that the plant is kept in a location with sunlight that is bright but indirect.
  6. Once the plant roots have grown to 2 inches which can take from 2 weeks to a month you can start removing them and place them in the soil in a pot making sure that the pot has drainage holes. After placing the plant in a new pot you need to keep the soil moist just like before for a couple of weeks to keep it acclimatized to its new location. Also, make sure that you place the pot in a location where there is bright but indirect sunlight
